MUNICH and FRANKFURT, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Blickfeld, a provider of lidar sensors and perception software, announced the implementation of the first phase of a people counting application at Frankfurt Airport (FRA). Blickfeld is cooperating with evaluation expert Sensalytics to implement the detection and analysis of passenger volume and movement for Fraport AG in the check-in hall A of Terminal 1. Using Blickfeld's powerful and accurate LiDAR sensor, combined with counting and tracking software, it is the first time to anonymously record passenger flow on a large scale. In the future, this will help optimize passenger logistics and realize short-term forecasts of passenger traffic.

Use lidar to anonymously detect passenger flow

The airport operator Fraport AG has installed a number of industrial Blickfeld LiDAR sensors "Cube 1" in Hall A of Terminal 1 to provide an overview of the entrance and exit areas and the waiting areas in front of some check-in and security checkpoints. The sensors generate point cloud data to create accurate 3D images of the lobby and record passengers and their movements while keeping their identities anonymous. The perception software of the Munich-based company allows passengers to be counted and their movements and walking paths analyzed through all sensors. Advantage: Comprehensive insight into the passenger flow in the airport terminal area.

The purpose is to use the additional data recorded in the registration hall to improve the passenger flow forecast at the security checkpoint. This allows to adjust the check-in channel personnel according to the actual passenger flow and avoid long waits. LiDAR sensors are very suitable for this purpose because they do not record any personal information but only distance data, so they comply with all data protection regulations.

“We gradually adopted sensors and the Blickfeld algorithm in the initial stages of the project and were very satisfied with the results,” said Jennifer Berz, project manager in Fraport’s strategy and digitalization department. "This technology has the potential to further optimize our customers' services."

"In addition to its prominent role in the automotive industry, LiDAR is a versatile technology that can achieve the highest level of reliability in many other applications. LiDAR data provides a new dimension of accuracy and privacy, because 3D distance data can not only Achieve the highest accuracy, and you can also achieve absolute anonymity. Compared with other sensor technologies such as cameras, this is a clear advantage," said Dr. Florian Petit, the founder of Blickfeld.

Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Munich, Germany, Blickfeld provides cutting-edge LiDAR sensors and perception software, supporting countless mobile and IoT applications.

Blickfeld LiDAR products meet extremely demanding technical specifications in terms of performance, cost and size required by the mass market.

Blickfeld is supported by Continental, Bayern Capital, Fluxunit (the corporate venture capital arm of the lighting company Osram), TEV (Tengelmann Ventures), High-Tech Gründerfonds and Unternehmertum Venture Capital Partners.
